Optimizing Images On Your Website

So the time came for a reality check. I did a site speed test and learned that my home page was over 5MB in size! This simply can not fly with the launch of our new home page and as we work out our services. One of the most important things about a website is it’s speed. So I wanted to take a moment to show you how you can easily start optimizing your websites.

You can run all your images through the Yahoo! SmushIt app at http://smushit.com and I check my site performances on either http://gtmetrix.com or http://tools.pingdom.com/fpt/

If you are on wordpress you can install the smushit plugin and have the plugin crush your images as you upload them to your website! A massive time saver and probably a plugin that should be installed on every single website.

With simply going through and optimizing my images I was able to get my website down to 1MB. I created a couple sprites too but I still have a lot of work to do. My load time changed dramatically as well.

Check out the results –

As you can see, this is a pretty significant increase in performance. Now I’ll enjoy saving money on bandwidth costs 🙂
